Renato Guttuso,Italian painter, gained his first practical experience of art in the form of Sicilian cart-painting in the bottega of a family friend Emilio Murdolo. The images of the exploits of the Normans in Sicily that adorned these carts instilled in Guttuso a strong and lasting preference for epic stories and vivacity of colour; similarly, the knowledge that he gained of the Sicilian countryside and peasantry through his father, a land-surveyor and committed socialist, had a marked effect on his work as a mature artist. While still at school in Palermo, he began to study painting in 1928 under Pippo Rizzo (b 1898), a minor Futurist who had extensive contacts with mainland Italy. He began studying law in 1930 at the University of Palermo but left the course soon after exhibiting at the Quadriennale in Rome in 1931.

Comme certains de ses neuf frères et soeurs, Norman Lindsay s’accomplit très tôt dans le vaste ‘Monde des arts’. Dès l’âge de 17 ans, il quitte Creswick pour Melbourne et travaille sur commande en tant que dessinateur, caricaturiste, illustrateur avec l’un de ses frères. Très appréciée, leur association dure une quinzaine d’années. En 1911, après un premier mariage et quelques années passées en Angleterre, il se réinstalle définitivement en Australie avec celle qui fut sa muse et modèle favori et devient sa seconde épouse, Rose Soady. Artiste polyptyque, Norman Lindsay nourrit une oeuvre très riche tant sur le plan pictural, sculptural que littéraire : onze romans, des recueils de poèmes et le fameux ‘The Magic Pudding’ (1918) , conte pour enfants adapté en dessin animé depuis 2000 par Karl Zwicky. Décédé le 21 novembre 1969, le prolifique Norman Lindsay est toujours un des artistes les plus célèbrés de son pays. En 1970, son autobiographie, ‘My Mask’ a fait l’objet d’une édition posthume.

Dante Gabriel Rossetti est l’un des fondateurs de la Confrérie préraphaélite (1848-53), avec William Holman Hunt et John Everett Millais. Jeunes étudiants à la Royal Academy de Londres, les préraphaélites contestent la culture artistique officielle anglaise pour son manque de vigueur, de sérieux et de sincérité: qualités qu’ils discernent au contraire dans la peinture qui s’est épanouie en Italie et dans le nord de l’Europe au XVe siècle, avant la Renaissance plus mûre de Raphaël. Ils n’entendent pas imiter le style de cette peinture, mais plutôt sa capacité d' »aller vers la nature », comme l’écrivait le critique John Ruskin, et d’affronter des sujets « sérieux et élevés ».
